OpenAI’s Sora, an innovative AI-driven video application, is making waves, having swiftly surpassed 1 million downloads within a mere five days of its release. Bill Peebles, the lead for Sora, revealed that the app’s adoption rate has outstripped that of even the groundbreaking ChatGPT at its launch, a feat made more impressive by its current invite-only access.
The iOS-exclusive Sora app, launched on September 30th, offers users a curated feed of AI-generated videos and the ability to craft their own using the powerful Sora 2 model. A notable ‘cameos’ feature allows for the insertion of users and their friends into AI-created scenes. However, the app’s burgeoning popularity has also brought challenges, notably the generation of potentially copyrighted content. In response, OpenAI is empowering copyright holders with greater control over their material and allowing users to specify the terms of likeness usage within Sora.
Peebles acknowledged the company’s focus on managing the rapid expansion and mitigating issues such as potential overmoderation. At present, Sora is available only in the United States and Canada, where it currently dominates the top spot on Apple’s App Store charts.
