Perplexity AI has removed all barriers to entry for its AI-enhanced browser, Comet, making it accessible to all users. Previously exclusive to subscribers of its premium plans, Comet integrates Perplexity’s core AI search capabilities and a personalized AI assistant directly into the browsing experience. The move signals a direct challenge to Google’s dominant Chrome browser in the increasingly competitive web browser market.

The browser’s initial launch in July catered to Perplexity Max subscribers ($200/month) before gradually expanding access. Now, anyone can download and use Comet without a subscription. In addition to the open access announcement, Perplexity has unveiled Comet Plus, a $5/month subscription offering curated news content from partners like CNN, Conde Nast, Fortune, Le Figaro, Le Monde, The Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post (for users not already on Pro/Max plans).

Perplexity is not alone in recognizing the potential of AI-integrated browsing. Google is embedding Gemini into Chrome, The Browser Company is developing Dia for Arc, and Opera has introduced its AI-powered Neon browser, indicating a broader industry trend towards intelligent web navigation.
