In a move set to reshape the landscape of AI development, Nvidia and OpenAI have unveiled a strategic partnership focused on bolstering OpenAI’s computational resources. Nvidia will grant OpenAI access to a staggering 10 gigawatts of AI datacenters equipped with millions of Nvidia GPUs. Furthermore, Nvidia plans to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI as each gigawatt comes online. This collaboration designates Nvidia as OpenAI’s primary compute and networking partner, providing critical support for OpenAI’s expanding AI factory initiatives.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted the paramount role of robust compute infrastructure in driving future AI advancements. This announcement marks a significant shift for OpenAI, diversifying its compute providers beyond Microsoft. It also aligns with OpenAI’s recent endeavors to establish its own data centers and a substantial $300 billion cloud computing agreement with Oracle. Previously, the two companies experienced friction over the “AGI clause” within their agreement, which stipulated Microsoft’s exclusion from earnings post-AGI (artificial general intelligence) attainment.
