A new global survey reveals a disturbing trend: activists, especially land and environmental defenders, are experiencing widespread online harassment on Meta’s platforms. Conducted by Global Witness, the survey found that over 90% of these activists reported online abuse linked to their work. Facebook emerged as the primary platform for this harassment, followed by X, WhatsApp, and Instagram.
Activists express concerns that unchecked online attacks could translate into real-world dangers. They are urging Meta and other social media companies to enhance content moderation and combat misinformation to protect users. Survey respondents also pointed to algorithms that amplify polarizing content and the proliferation of bots as contributing factors to the problem.
An Indonesian activist shared her experience of being targeted with false accusations on Facebook, believing it placed her in physical danger. In response, Meta has stated that users should utilize the available tools to safeguard themselves against bullying and harassment. The findings underscore the urgent need for social media platforms to address the safety and security concerns of activists who are increasingly vulnerable to online attacks.
