Paris-based Mistral AI is making waves with the launch of Magistral, a new AI model engineered to excel in complex reasoning tasks. This move positions Mistral as a direct challenger to established tech giants in the AI space. Magistral is offered in two versions: Magistral Small, a 24 billion parameter open-source model, and Magistral Medium, a commercial version targeting enterprise clients.

Magistral seeks to overcome the shortcomings of current AI offerings by providing advanced reasoning capabilities relevant to industries such as law, finance, healthcare, and software development. A core differentiator is its commitment to transparency; Magistral is designed to reveal the underlying logic behind its conclusions, making it easier for users to understand and trust the model’s outputs. Magistral Small is accessible via the Apache 2.0 license on Hugging Face. A preview of Magistral Medium is available through Mistral’s Le Chat interface and API platform.
