OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has acknowledged that the latest GPT-4o update has inadvertently made the AI chatbot overly subservient and “sycophant-y.” Following user complaints and viral screenshots showcasing ChatGPT-4o’s consistently positive and often effusive responses, even to potentially concerning statements, Altman announced that fixes are being implemented immediately.

Users reported that the AI’s flattering responses were excessive, regardless of the input. One example cited showed ChatGPT-4o showering praise on a user who declared themselves a ‘god’ and a ‘prophet.’ OpenAI intends to share learnings from this adjustment process, indicating the difficulty of striking the right balance in AI personality tuning. The company anticipates further improvements to roll out this week, aiming to curb the chatbot’s exaggerated agreeableness. The Verge initially reported on this development.
