A new theory suggests Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Gemini aren’t forging a path towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), but rather acting as ‘Intelligence Gateways.’ This perspective argues that LLMs primarily serve as sophisticated reflections of existing human knowledge, processing and presenting information without genuine creative or original thought. This reclassification has significant implications for how we perceive the risks, advancements, and appropriate applications of these tools. By viewing LLMs as conduits to existing information rather than creators of new intelligence, we can better understand their potential and limitations, and refine our expectations for the future of AI and its relationship with human cognition.
