The highly anticipated trial between Elon Musk and OpenAI has commenced, with Musk taking the stand to argue that he was misled by OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman and president Greg Brockman into providing funding for the company.
Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI in 2015, claimed that he believed the company was a nonprofit organization focused on developing AI for the benefit of humanity, rather than enriching its executives. He stated that he provided $38 million in funding, which was utilized to create a company now valued at $800 billion.
Musk expressed regret, stating,
I was misled into providing free funding to create a startup.
He also warned about the potential dangers of AI, citing a conversation with Google co-founder Larry Page, who allegedly said
that will be fine as long as artificial intelligence survives.
Notably, Musk’s own AI company, xAI, has been revealed to use OpenAI’s models to train its chatbot, Grok. The trial has sparked protests outside the courthouse, with demonstrators calling for a boycott of ChatGPT and Tesla.
The outcome of the trial may have significant implications for OpenAI’s potential initial public offering (IPO) and the future of AI development. Musk is seeking to remove Altman and Brockman from their roles and reverse the company’s restructuring, which enabled it to operate a for-profit subsidiary.
