Seven families of victims affected by the Tumbler Ridge school shooting in Canada have taken legal action against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, citing negligence for not reporting suspicious activity on ChatGPT to the authorities.
The lawsuit alleges that OpenAI’s systems had flagged the suspected shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, for conversations related to gun violence, but the company chose not to alert the police, prioritizing its reputation and upcoming initial public offering (IPO) instead.
According to reports by The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI had considered reporting Van Rootselaar’s activity to law enforcement but ultimately decided against it, sparking concerns about the company’s responsibility to prevent harm.
