Agentic AI Revolutionizes Software Engineering: Automation Enters a New Era

Software engineering is undergoing a significant transformation with the emergence of agentic AI, a technology poised to revolutionize the development, testing, and delivery of software. Agentic AI agents, self-directing entities capable of managing entire software projects from conception to deployment, are being increasingly adopted by software engineering teams.

A recent survey of 300 engineering and technology executives reveals that the adoption of agentic AI is gaining momentum, with over four-fifths of organizations planning to prioritize agentic AI investments in the next two years. Currently, most teams are using AI in a limited capacity, but the report indicates a significant shift towards more widespread adoption.

The benefits of agentic AI are substantial, with 98% of respondents expecting accelerated delivery of software projects, resulting in a projected 37% increase in speed over the next two years. Furthermore, most teams intend to utilize agentic AI to manage the product development and software development lifecycles (PDLC and SDLC) from start to finish.

However, the report also highlights the need for significant organizational and process changes to fully leverage the potential of agentic AI. Teams must adapt to new working methods and invest time and effort in overcoming the barriers to agentic AI adoption.

Key findings from the report include:

  • 51% of software teams are currently utilizing agentic AI, with 45% planning to adopt it within the next 12 months.
  • 32% of respondents anticipate significant improvements from agentic AI use, while 9% believe the improvements will be transformative.
  • Most teams expect incremental gains from agentic AI use over the next two years, but anticipate substantial benefits in the long term.
