Florida’s Attorney General, James Uthmeier, has launched an investigation into OpenAI, driven by concerns regarding public safety and potential national security risks. The primary worry is that OpenAI’s data and technological capabilities could be vulnerable to exploitation by adversaries of the United States, including the Chinese Communist Party.

Additionally, Uthmeier highlighted the link between OpenAI’s ChatGPT and various criminal activities. These include the spread of child sexual abuse material and the promotion of self-harm. There are also suggestions that ChatGPT may have played a role in assisting an individual suspected of being involved in a shooting incident at Florida State University in April 2025.
