Autonomous Vehicle Companies Keep Remote Intervention Data Under Wraps

Autonomous vehicle companies are withholding crucial information about their reliance on remote assistance teams, including the frequency of human intervention in self-driving car operations.

Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) launched an investigation into the use of remote assistance operators (RAO) and requested that robotaxi companies disclose details about their remote monitoring and intervention practices.

Seven major robotaxi companies, including Aurora, May Mobility, Motional, Nuro, Tesla, Waymo, and Amazon’s Zoox, were sent letters by the senator’s office, seeking transparency on their use of remote workers to oversee driverless vehicles and step in when needed.
