US Senators Call for Data Center Energy Transparency

US Senators Elizabeth Warren and Josh Hawley are advocating for increased transparency regarding data center energy consumption. In a letter to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), they requested that the agency collect comprehensive, annual energy-use disclosures from data centers.

The senators argue that this data is crucial for accurate grid planning and will support policymaking to prevent large companies from increasing electricity costs for American families. The EIA has launched a pilot program to assess data center energy use, but the program is voluntary and currently limited to Texas and Washington.

As concerns about the environmental impact of data centers continue to grow, with these facilities estimated to consume significant amounts of electricity, policymakers aim to make informed decisions about reducing their carbon footprint by collecting more accurate data on energy consumption.
