Tesla’s Autonomous Driving System Faces Intensified Safety Probe

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system is under heightened scrutiny as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) expands its investigation into the technology’s safety during poor road visibility conditions.

The system, designed to enable autonomous driving, features a ‘degradation detection’ mechanism that prompts drivers to intervene when the vehicle’s cameras cannot clearly capture the road, thus limiting the use of Full Self-Driving.

However, the NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is now conducting an in-depth engineering analysis to assess whether the system’s limitations, particularly under adverse weather conditions, pose a significant safety risk.

This probe marks the second and final phase before a potential recall, underscoring the escalating concerns surrounding the safety and reliability of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving technology.
