Parents Seek Justice: Confronting Social Media Giants in Court

A group of around a dozen parents gathered outside a courtroom in February, anxiously waiting to see if they would be allowed to enter. They were waiting for a lottery to determine who would get a seat, with a court staff member holding a gray tote bag that would decide their fate. The parents were there to confront Mark Zuckerberg, and they were not alone in their grief. Many of them wore butterfly clips on their bags and coats, a symbolic gesture to honor the children they had lost. These parents believe that their children’s experiences online contributed to their deaths, and they were there to see if the social media companies could be held liable.
