Tesla has stopped using the term ‘Autopilot’ to describe its self-driving vehicle capabilities in California, thus avoiding a 30-day sales suspension in the state.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced that Tesla has taken corrective action after it was found in December that the company’s marketing materials were in violation of state law, misleading customers into believing its vehicles could drive autonomously.
The DMV’s complaint stemmed from written marketing materials for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features that Tesla began publishing in May 2021, which later prompted the company to append ‘(Supervised)’ to its descriptions.
