A recent discovery has shed light on a significant limitation in AI technology: its inability to recognize syllables and correct spelling mistakes based on phonetic sounds. For instance, if you type a word with a letter that sounds the same as the correct one, AI will not correct the error. This is because AI does not understand that certain letter combinations, such as ‘I’ and ‘E’, can produce the same sound.
This shortcoming is evident when trying to spell a word like ‘ridiculous’. Although the correct spelling may not be immediately apparent, a human can sound out the word and figure out the correct spelling. This fundamental skill, learned in kindergarten, is surprisingly lacking in AI spell check systems.
This limitation has significant implications for the future of spell check technology. As AI continues to evolve, it is likely that traditional spell check systems will become obsolete. The question remains: why are humans relying on AI to spell check in the first place? It seems counterintuitive to use a technology that is inferior to human abilities.
